Description:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Study of the U.S. Institutes for Secondary Educators provides\u00a0three multinational groups of experienced secondary school educators (including teachers, administrators, teacher trainers, curriculum developers, textbook writers,\u00a0government\u00a0education\u00a0officials, and others) with a deeper understanding of U.S. society,\u00a0education, and culture.\u202f Three institutes will\u00a0provide content and materials for participants to develop high school-level curricula about the United States.\u202f Two of the Institutes,\u202ftailored for secondary school teachers,\u202fwill\u202ffocus on content and materials about the United States rather than teaching methods and pedagogy.\u202f The third Institute is for experienced administrators,\u00a0including teacher trainers, curriculum developers, textbook writers, and government education\u00a0officials.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Institutes\u00a0will take place at various academic institutions throughout the United States over the five weeks beginning in June 2023.\u00a0 Each Institute includes a four-week academic residency component and a one-week integrated study tour to Institute will explore the shaping of American identity and the chemistry between that identity and U.S. history, politics, and the democratic process.\u00a0 The Institute will cover a broad range of American experiences that have influenced and been influenced by American national identity.\u00a0 The Institute will provide a deeper understanding of major currents in U.S. political thought, from the colonial period to the present, and explore contemporary U.S. political and social debates and public policy, relating them back to U.S. political thought and American identity.\u00a0 The University of Montana (UM) in Missoula, MT will administer this program; the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA will host the Institute in Amherst, MA.<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><b>Contemporary American Literature<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This Institute will provide a multinational group of experienced and highly motivated foreign university faculty and other related specialists with a deeper understanding of U.S. society and culture, past and present, through an examination of contemporary American literature.\u00a0 The Institute will examine how major contemporary writers, schools, and movements reflect the U.S. literary canon.\u00a0 The Institute will also explore the diverse communities and voices that constitute the American literary landscape and expose participants to writers who are establishing new directions for American literature.\u00a0 The Institute will cover a variety of contemporary American writers and writing and suggest how the themes explored reflect larger currents within contemporary U.S. society and culture.\u00a0 The University of Montana (UM) in Missoula, MT will administer and host this Institute.<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><b>Journalism and Media<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This\u202fInstitute will provide a multinational group of experienced and highly motivated foreign journalism instructors and other related specialists with a deeper understanding of journalism and\u00a0media\u2019s role\u00a0in U.S. society.\u202f The Institute will examine\u00a0journalists\u2019 role\u00a0in recognizing and preventing disinformation.\u00a0It\u00a0will explore strategies for media and information literacy to counter disinformation.\u202f Additionally, the Institute will examine best\u00a0journalism practices\u00a0by discussing the\u00a0media\u2019s rights and responsibilities\u00a0in a democratic society, including editorial independence, journalistic ethics, legal constraints, and international journalism.\u202f\u00a0The Institute will also examine pedagogical strategies for teaching journalism students\u00a0the\u00a0tradecraft basics: researching, critical thinking, reporting, interviewing, writing, and editing.\u202f The program will also highlight the impact of technology in journalism, including the influence of the Internet, globalization of the news media, and other\u00a0transformations.\u202f The University of Montana in Missoula,\u00a0Montana,\u00a0will oversee and administer this program.\u00a0Arizona State University in multinational group of experienced foreign university faculty, scholars,\u202fresearchers,\u202fand religious leaders with a deeper understanding of U.S. society, culture, values, and institutions through the lens of diversity and national unity.\u00a0 The Institute will examine the ethnic, racial, social, economic, political, and religious contexts in which various cultures have manifested in U.S. society while focusing on the ways in which these cultures have influenced social movements and American identity throughout U.S. history.\u00a0 The program will draw from a diverse disciplinary base and will itself provide a model of how a foreign university might approach the study of American culture and society.\u00a0 The University of Montana (UM) in Missoula, MT will administer this program; New York University in New York, NY will host the Institute.<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><b>U.S. Economics and Sustainable Development<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This\u202fInstitute\u202fwill provide a multinational group of experienced foreign university faculty, researchers,\u202fexperts,\u202fand policymakers with a deeper understanding of key components and structures of the U.S. economy.\u00a0 Using a multidisciplinary approach, the program will explore various topics of socioeconomics; how financial institutions, investors, and businesses interact to support sustainable economic development, innovation, and growth; and increasing diverse and equitable employment through institutional regulation, social inclusion strategies, and private and public policies.\u00a0 Throughout the Institute, participants will examine the interplay of climate change, U.S. business innovation, corporate regulation, entrepreneurship, and economic theory.\u00a0 Participants will have opportunities to learn about key institutions and stakeholders in the U.S. economy and meet with a diverse range of business leaders and small business owners, among others.\u00a0 The University of Montana (UM) in Missoula, MT will administer this program; the Institute for Training and Development (ITD), in conjunction with Suffolk University, will host the Institute in Amherst and Boston, with a deeper understanding of new approaches to U.S. foreign policy and how the U.S. formulates and implements its foreign policy.\u202f The Institute will include a historical review of significant events, individuals, and philosophies that have shaped U.S. foreign policy.\u202f It will explain the role of critical influences on U.S. foreign policy, including the executive and legislative branches of government, the media, the U.S. public, think tanks, non-governmental organizations, and multilateral institutions.\u202f The Institute will also examine the current U.S. foreign policymaking landscape and recent trends that shape policy.\u202f The University of Montana in Missoula, Montana, will oversee and administer this program.
